Ethical Cloud and AI Vendor Selection for Criminal Defenders: A NACDL CLE

Jeff Sherr presents Ethical Cloud and AI Vendor Selection for Criminal Defenders for NACDL

Known as the “trainer of trainers” in public defense circles, Jeff Sherr, Senior Resident Public Defender with Reduct, presented Ethical Cloud and AI Vendor Selection for Criminal Defenders for National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers (NACDL).

The session gave criminal defense lawyers a framework for evaluating AI and cloud vendors before adoption, covering three core areas:

  • Protecting client confidentiality and attorney-client privilege
  • Vetting vendor contracts for data retention, subprocessor risks, and conflict of interest clauses
  • Meeting ethical obligations under rules governing competence, confidentiality, and supervision of non-lawyer assistants

Jeff also walked through concrete tools like vendor scorecards, checklists, and model contract language to help defenders identify hidden risks and ask the right questions before clicking accept on any new tool.

The course carries 1.0 ethics credit and is available for $40 through the NACDL CLE catalog.

Reduct continues to bring these conversations to defenders where they are. See upcoming webinars.
